My "rookie year" as a band director at our state evaluation. I was blessed to share the stage with such a special group of people!

In the summer of 2022, a mentor and close friend of mine suggested that it was time for me to start sharing my experiences with others. Thus the origin of this website began near the end of the same year.

I started my music education career in 2018 and like anyone, it has had ups and downs. In my first position, I was in an area with not a ton of other programs or directors around for me to observe and learn from. I was a tenderfoot and could have easily felt hopeless in this situation. Thankfully, I was blessed to have friends and mentors who helped me through those first four years (or as I like to jokingly call it, The First 48) who helped build skill and confidence in me. For every challenge I have faced, I have had someone who has helped me along the way.

Having now been in the trenches for some time and as I continue to mentor many student teachers and former students, I am realizing that many younger teachers can feel overwhelmed, unsure of where to start, or unfortunately could lose interest in our profession without the right kind of support. I hope to provide someone who is just starting off (or perhaps in an area that is isolated) comfort and validation that they are in the right place through sharing personal experiences.

I have nothing to sell. I do not claim to be a replacement for a clinician or mentor. I do not consider myself an expert in any field of music education. I just want to help a field that has changed everyone who is reading this blurb's life for the better. Whether you are just starting your career or have been teaching music for many years, I hope you find something beneficial here.

Yours in service,

Matt
